Get ready for an action-packed day chasing some of Florida's most sought-after freshwater gamefish. Captain JP McKay knows these Everglades canals like the back of his hand, and he's got the inside track on where those trophy peacock bass are hiding. This full 8-hour trip gives you plenty of time to work different spots and really dial in your technique. Whether you're a seasoned bass angler or new to the game, Cap'n JP will make sure you're on fish and having a blast.
We'll kick things off early, meeting up at first light when those peacocks are most active. The Everglades canals are a maze of fishy-looking spots, and we'll hit a mix of open water, lily pad fields, and submerged timber. Expect to do a lot of casting – these fish respond best to an active presentation. We'll start with artificial lures, but if the bite is tough, we can always switch to live shiners (available for purchase). Don't worry if you're not used to working lures or live bait, Cap'n JP will show you the ropes. Besides the peacocks, we've got a good shot at largemouth bass, and panfish like bluegill and oscars are always willing to play. It's non-stop action in a stunning natural setting.
Peacock bass fishing is all about aggressive presentations. We'll be throwing a mix of topwater lures, jerkbaits, and swimbaits. The key is to make that lure look like it's trying to escape – erratic, darting retrieves drive these fish crazy. When we spot fish cruising the shallows, sight-fishing with weightless soft plastics can be deadly. If we switch to live bait, it's all about proper placement and letting that shiner do the work. Cap'n JP will teach you how to work the structure, read the water, and most importantly, how to set the hook when one of these bruisers strikes. Be ready for some serious fights – peacock bass pull like freight trains and aren't afraid to wrap you around cover.
Peacock Bass: These aren't your average bass. Imported from South America, peacocks have taken hold in South Florida's warm waters and boy, do they put on a show. They're aggressive, hard-fighting, and absolutely gorgeous. Expect fish in the 2-4 pound range, with the chance at a real trophy pushing 7 or 8 pounds. Peacocks love structure and current, so we'll focus on canal bends, drop-offs, and any submerged cover we can find. They're most active in warmer months, making this an ideal summer and early fall fishery.
Largemouth Bass: The classic Florida bucket-mouth. While peacocks get the glory, don't sleep on the quality of largemouth fishing in these canals. We're talking fish up to 8 pounds that'll test your gear and your skills. Largemouth tend to hold a bit deeper than peacocks, so we'll work some different techniques when targeting them. They're suckers for big soft plastics worked slowly along the bottom.
Panfish: When the bigger fish aren't cooperating, panfish are always willing to save the day. Bluegill, warmouth, and oscars provide fast action and are perfect for keeping kids (or impatient adults) entertained. They're also excellent eating if you want to take a few home for the fryer. We'll use small jigs or live worms to target these scrappy little guys.
This isn't your average lake fishing trip. The Everglades ecosystem is unlike anywhere else, and you never know what you might see – from gators sunning themselves to exotic birds swooping overhead. The fishing itself is world-class, with opportunities for multiple species and some seriously impressive catches. Cap'n JP's local knowledge means you're not just fishing, you're getting an insider's tour of one of America's most unique environments. Plus, that extended 8-hour day gives you time to really explore and maximize your chances at landing that fish of a lifetime.
If you're looking for a freshwater fishing adventure that'll have you hooked (pun intended), this is it. Whether you're a seasoned bass pro or someone who's never held a rod, Cap'n JP will make sure you have an awesome day on the water. You'll learn new techniques, catch some of the most beautiful fish Florida has to offer, and come away with stories to last a lifetime. Spots fill up fast, especially during peak season, so don't wait. Grab your sunscreen, your lucky hat, and let's go chase some Everglades gold!
These green-bodied bruisers are the kings of Florida's freshwater. Averaging 1-4 pounds, with some topping 10, they love hanging around weeds, fallen trees, and docks. Spring and fall are prime seasons when they're most active. Largemouths put up a great fight, especially on light tackle. They're not picky eaters - we'll use everything from plastic worms to topwater lures. One local trick: try red-colored baits. Largemouths have a thing for red, probably because it looks like injured prey. When the water's murky, go with noisy lures to help them zero in. These fish use their lateral line to detect vibrations, so a rattling crankbait can be deadly. Whether you're a seasoned pro or first-timer, landing a big largemouth is always a rush.

These colorful fighters are the stars of South Florida's canals. Most run 2-4 pounds, but 8-pounders aren't unheard of. Look for them in warm, slow-moving water near bridges, fallen trees, and canal ends. They're aggressive predators, often smashing lures right at the surface. Spring and fall are peak seasons, but they'll bite year-round in our warm climate. Peacocks put up an amazing fight - pound for pound, they'll outmuscle a largemouth any day. Live shiners are peacock candy, but they'll hit a variety of lures too. One local tip: focus on dawn and dusk when peacocks are most active. If you see them following but not striking, switch to a faster retrieve. These fish love to chase, so don't be afraid to really rip that lure. Non-native to Florida, peacocks offer a unique tropical gamefish experience without leaving the States.
